Description: Directed by Emmy Award-winning documentarian Alison Ellwood, Let the Canary Sing “chronicles Lauper’s meteoric ascent to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, ever-evolving punk style, unwavering feminism and tireless advocacy. The documentary takes the audience on an engaging exploration of a renowned and pioneering artist who has left a remarkable legacy with her art,” a release from the streamer shares.

Ellwood’s credits include the two-part documentary Laurel Canyon, about the music scene that flourished in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood in the 1960s, and The Go-Go’s, about the all-female pop band that were contemporaries of Lauper.

“Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time. Until now,” shared Lauper. “When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that. I’d like to thank Alison, the producers and all of the amazing documentary participants who agreed to be interviewed.”

The title stems from a lawsuit Lauper faced more than 40 years ago after she went solo following her time with Blue Angel. The judge who resolved the case said of Lauper, “Let the canary sing.”

CBS Sunday Morning 06/02/24: Opening, Cyndi Lauper was a pop music dynamo and MTV-favorite singer who later won a Tony Award for her songs for the stage musical “Kinky Boots.” But she wanted more than to just have fun. The subject of a new documentary on Paramount+ called “Let the Canary Sing,” Lauper talks with correspondent Anthony Mason about how music made her tumultuous home life better; how she had to be convinced about her breakout record, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”; and about criticism from producer Quincy Jones that she was a “troublemaker.”
