The night festivities start with various interviews on the “black carpet” of guests who are attending this special event. See Metallica in a unique performance at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles as part of the third annual “Helping Hands Concert and Auction” benefiting their “All Within My Hands” foundation. Hosted by comedian/late-night TV star Jimmy Kimmel, the night also featured special guest openers Greta Van Fleet, unannounced presenter Robert Downey Jr. and several representatives of the various charitable organizations benefited by the foundation’s efforts.

The concert’s main draw was a rare opportunity to watch James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo (and backing musician Avi Vinocur) play an acoustic set. ‘Tallica classics “Blackened” and “The Unforgiven” began the show, before the band dug deep for some inspired cover songs that paid homage to their inspiration: “Borderline” from Thin Lizzy, “It’s Killing Me” by UFO and the Irish standard “Whiskey in the Jar,” which Metallica famously covered in 1998.

Then, the electric performance of nine songs from up and down the band’s catalog including the live premiere of “Lux Æterna,” For “Nothing Else Matters,” Metallica was joined by St. Vincent who provided a contrasting of vocal styles alongside Hetfield and elevated the moment to one of the highlights of the evening. The night ended with a throwback to Metallica’s early days, “Seek & Destroy,” which had the gathered masses standing up and pumping their fists all the way from the posh couches in front of the stage to exclusive VIP ticketholders up to the mezzanine level.
