Duran Duran a Night In Documentary 06/04/18: In this hour-long documentary from Back2Back Productions, viewers join Simon, Nick, John and Roger as they sit back to watch and talk through personally selected clips of archive television, music shows, movies, performances, adverts and children’s shows that have inspired them across their career. The clips trigger memories and stories that are as surprising to the other band members as they will be to viewers at home.
Taylor and his three bandmates took great pains in selecting choice cuts from the BBC archive that would best represent their experiences and interests growing up.

“There was just so much to choose from, we could have programmed hours of music,” says John Taylor.
In an exclusive interview, they discuss their influences from the worlds of film and art, referencing Blade Runner, Andy Warhol and Tomorrow’s World. From Barbarella in ‘68 to Patti Smith’s Horses in ’76, David Bailey on Andy Warhol in ‘73 to Prince’s Kiss in ’86 and Roxy Music’s Virginia Plain in ‘72 to Midnight Express in ‘78. A Night In is a trip down memory lane with the band as they remember the shows that capture a particular moment in their creative lives. There’s even a moment for Roobarb And Custard!

With more than 100 million records sold, 18 American hit singles and 30 UK top 20 songs, Duran Duran have won Grammy, Ivor Novello, Brit, Q, BPI, Silver Clef and MTV Music Video Awards (amongst others) and were inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993. Their name famously comes from the character Dr. Durand Durand in the film Barbarella.

This documentary sees the group talking about their early inspirations, as they look back together at the television programmes, music and film that they grew up on from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Bassist John Taylor says: “Without the BBC, there would be no Duran Duran. Forty years ago this October, the BBC first aired Barbarella. It was while watching that late-night screening of the Jane Fonda sci-fi epic that members of a burgeoning Birmingham post-punk band decided the name of one of the films characters – Durand Durand – would make for a cool and unusual band name.
“The BBC provided us with a constant stream of the best contemporary music throughout the ’70s, just when we were coming of age and finding ourselves as individuals and future artists. Everybody who was anybody went through the doors of Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, and we were there soaking it all in, so it is with great pleasure we present our curated night of music on BBC Four this coming June 29. These documentaries and clips have allowed us to explore the origins of the band through personal experiences and cultural touchstones. Even the savviest fans will find surprises.”
Jan Younghusband, Head of Commissioning for BBC Music, says: “Duran Duran have remained one of the world’s most influential and successful bands across the last four decades, starting off in the early 80s as an alternative group who embraced the New Romantic era. Fusing fashion, design, art and technology with timeless music they have continued to captured the hearts of millions around the world across several generations. As the home of music on BBC Television, I’m thrilled that BBC Four is celebrating this unique group with a night of exclusive programming.”

DURAN DURAN Video Archives 2018 VOLUME LVII (“There’s Something You Should Know” Documentary)

Duran Duran: There’s Something You Should Know
Duran Duran are one of the UK’s greatest and most enduring pop bands of all time. In the space of four years, five lads with one dream became the biggest band in the world. They went from playing at the Rum Runner, a small new wave nightclub in Birmingham, to filling Japan’s Budokan stadium, and arenas around the world. But this extraordinary success came at a price when, in 1985, the band imploded, the tolls of excess on all fronts took over and creative differences caused them to fracture.
Charting their trajectory since they formed, the story is told through seven of their 14 groundbreaking albums – each one uncovering a compelling chapter in the band’s journey: the fame, the fortune, the meltdowns, the hits, the misses, the iconic videos, the tours, the fans, the partying and the supermodels. With intimate access to each band member, and previously unseen archive footage, the documentary reveals how their meteoric rise to fame at such a young age affected each of them and how they have reclaimed their seat at the table with rock royalty.
It is a story of survival. Four decades on and the band are still getting Top 10 hits. In 2016, their 14th studio album, Paper Gods, co-produced by Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers and Mr Hudson, and featuring soul pop sensation Janelle Monae – was critically acclaimed worldwide, not just by fans, but by fellow musicians, artists and the music industry. The film looks at how they survived this incredible journey and how they still compete in today’s cut-throat pop business.
Back2back Executive Producer/MD David Notman-Watt says: “Duran Duran are still standing where so many of their peers have fallen by the wayside. Revealing, surprising, and at times shocking, this documentary lifts the lid on the real story of one of the truly great British bands.”
The documentary includes contributions from Cindy Crawford, Boy George, Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers, Antony Price, Russell Mulcahy, Nick Egan and many more.

John Taylor (Duran Duran) Q&A Session @ 92YTribeca in New York City on 16 October 2012 for “Into The Pleasure Groove” Book Release (Single Camera) RARE DVD

John Taylor with Glenda Bailey: In The Pleasure Groove: Love, Death & Duran Duran – Reading / Interview
Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 7:30 pm
Venue: 92YTribeca Mainstage
Location: 92YTribeca, 200 Hudson St, New York, NY
Video: Single camera with some occasional visual obstruction with good audio

After Glenda Bailey accepted an assignment to interview Duran Duran’s John Taylor before a roomful of his most ardent fans, the Harper’s Bazaar editor did what any good journalist would do: her homework.

“I went back in time and looked in a magazine called Smash HIts,” she told the audience at Manhattan’s 92Y TriBeCa last week. “And in 1985, they asked John, ‘If you were a household product, what would you be?’ ”

“I know the answer to that!” Taylor said gamely. “I said a refrigerator, because that way I’d be cool!”

Indeed, since the early ’80s, Taylor has been the epitome of cool — to the members of the night’s almost exclusively female audience at least. As the suave, good-looking backbone of music-video pioneers Duran Duran, the bassist circled the globe like a new-wave James Bond with a license to bed supermodels and indulge his narcotic excesses without so much as wrinkling his Antony Price suits.

But the party had to end: Taylor was an addict with more than his fair share of insecurities and delusions. This is the journey that he documents in his just-released autobiography, In the Pleasure Groove: Love, Death and Duran Duran.

Certainly the story of a rock star’s rise and fall is nothing new. But as far as the thousands of fans who have attended his book signings in the U.S. and his native U.K (where In the Pleasure Groove reached no. 6 on The Sunday Times best-seller list for nonfiction hardbacks) are concerned, they’re getting a privileged look at the idol they’ve been worshipping for more than three decades.

Helen Polyzos, a 41-year-old Brooklyn assistant district attorney, called out of work and left her two young sons at home with her husband to claim her place in line outside of a Midtown Barnes & Noble more than seven hours ahead of Taylor’s Oct. 16 autograph session. “When I arrived at 5:15 a.m., there were already eight people ahead of me,” she says.

“For women of my generation, we all loved Duran Duran in general, but women just loved John,” says Jill Schwartzman, Taylor’s editor at Dutton. “I was at my friend’s 40th birthday a few months ago. We’re all dancing, and a Duran Duran song came on. I was about to meet John for the first time the next day, and I said to my friends: ‘Guess who I’m having lunch with tomorrow? John Taylor.’ They all screamed so loudly, I can’t even tell you.”

Musician memoirists including Eric Clapton and Keith Richards no doubt helped to tee up demand for tell-alls from Taylor and fellow ’80s icons Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart and Cyndi Lauper, who also have released books in the past month.

During his talk with Bailey, Taylor said he was approached about penning his autobiography at the beginning of 2011. “It was suggested to me that if I wanted to write a book, it was a good time,” he said. “There was a bit of a gold rush on in the publishing business.”

Taylor reportedly landed an advance of more than $500,000. While his agent Jonathan Conway would not reveal the exact amount, he says that figure is “conservative.”

“There was exceptional interest in John’s autobiography during the auction for his book,” Conway tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And the bidding war amongst many major publishers was, inevitably, intense.”

Duran Duran might be a staple of that decade of excess, but its fan base isn’t locked in the past. Publishers needed only to log on to Facebook and Twitter to see the band’s large and passionate international following. Taylor himself has almost 50,000 Twitter followers.

Excessive tweeting is one of the few vices Taylor has left. He recently quit smoking and next month will celebrate a major milestone: 18 years of sobriety following a stint in an Arizona rehab facility.

“The hardest topic for me to write about was the drug use, and how I was going to create a scene that [conveys a] sense of real desperation to show that I had reached a bottom,” Taylor, whose drugs of choice were alcohol and cocaine, tells THR. “I had this night in mind that I remembered very clearly, and I thought, ‘Imagine if Quentin Tarantino wrote that scene.’ ”

Taylor says his drug-taking partner often was ex-Duran guitarist Andy Taylor (the two are not related), who detailed his own downward spiral in 2008’s Wild Boy. “I didn’t read Andy’s book,” Taylor says. “I sort of grazed. I got a feel for the tone of it.”

Why not?

“For the same reason I wouldn’t ask any of my bandmates to read my book,” he says. “It’s like, I was there. I’m too close. It’s going to impinge too heavily on my sense of things.

“I was so happy when Nick [Rhodes, Duran Duran co-founder and keyboard player] said to me the other day, ‘Johnny, I’m not going to read your book,’ ” Taylor continues. “I said, ‘Nick, I’m so happy about that, because you really don’t need to.’ There’s a lot of love for Nick in the book, but he’s going to be, ‘But it wasn’t like that,’ and he’s going to get all out of joint about it.”

As excited as the Duranie army is for Taylor’s book, imagine the hysteria if the original plan for a Duran Duran autobiography featuring all the members had come to fruition. “We tried several times to write a band book,” he reveals. “I thought it should all be in quotes — like, Simon [LeBon, lead singer] says one thing, then John. It’s really the only way. But I’ve come to realize it’s an impossible task. That’s one of the reasons why I decided to take the bull by the horns and write my own. Not only did I feel that it was going to take a long time for us to actually get it together, but I felt it wouldn’t be terribly good, either.”

Even though he claims his memoirs offer a candid look at his wild, debaucherous ride and subsequent recovery, Taylor lets his fans get close — but not too close. “You don’t put everything out there,” he says. “I feel like I went into enough detail to give people the sense of what was going on, but you can’t tell everything. I mean, how can you? You wouldn’t have any friends left.”

This “Remastered” edition is not just an “updated” version as some other episodes of the “remastered” series have proven to be. This Remastered episode of Duran Duran has been completely produced with NEW footage by over 35% to 40% of the entire episode. The Remastered episode contains NEW interviews from 2010 from Simon, Nick, John and Roger Taylor who originally declined to be interviewed for the original episode in 1999. This episode (unlike the original) address Duran’s continuing career covering the years of Pop Trash and then the split with Warren and how the original members came tgether to risk it all with an original band line up in the early 2000’s that lead to the release of Astronaut. Following that is more new footage regarding the Red Carpet Massacre release right up to the new single “All You Need Is now”. Over all both episodes together encompass a more complete look at the band. Both episodes from 1999 and 2010 have footage as well as interviews that the other episode does NOT have. DURAN DURAN VIDEO ARCHIVES in UK Documentaries:European/Worldwide #29

1. (UK TV) BBC 1 “Wild Boys: The Story of Duran Duran” Air Date 08/28/2000: Duran Duran came out of Birmingham and conquered the world during the 1980s. Originally a New Romantic band in full make-up and cossack pants, they rapidly became bedroom pin-ups for a generation of teenage girls.

Led by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, Duran Duran dominated the British and American charts in the mid-1980s with classic singles such as Rio, Save a Prayer and Wild Boys. Pioneers of the MTV-style promo video – from the X-rated Girls on Film to Raiders of the Lost Ark spoof Hungry Like the Wolf – Duran Duran were the 80s equivalent of the Beatles in America and outsold Spandau Ballet and Wham! in their pomp.

60 million records later, Le Bon and Rhodes are seen touring America with their Pop Trash project from the early 2000s. The documentary reflects on the heady heights of Duran Duran’s career, the cracks in their make-up plus the effects of sex, drugs and fame on ordinary boys from working class backgrounds.

Apart from the key Durannies – Le Bon, Rhodes and John Taylor – the programme also features celebrity interviews with Debbie Harry, Yasmin Le Bon, Duran Duran managers Paul and Michael Berrow, Claudia Schiffer, Nile Rodgers and Lou Reed.

2. (UK TV) BBC Three Liquid Assets “Duran Duran’s Millions” Air Date Saturday 10/23/2004: Alex Stanger traces Duran Duran from the early years in Hollywood Birmingham, through twenty five years of rock ’n roll excess and looks at the incredible success of their comeback

1. (UK TV) SkyArts Duran Duran Songbook 01/28/09: This two part special from th UK was broadcasted in two parts. The show was an intimate live event, that showcased the band’s musical catalogue and included a rare live performance of “Late Bar”.

As the performance was for TV there were strictly no cameras allowed and the audience were placed in front and back of Duran Duran on stage. This allowed the band to communicate with the audience on a personal level, with Roger Taylor turning this back on many occasions asking if everything is fine and if there were any wishes for songs to play. John Taylor also commented how intimate the show was.

Track listing of live performances for the entire Parts 1 and 2 are as follows:

Part 1: ”Planet Earth”, “Late Bar”, “The Chauffeur”, “Rio” and “Skin Trade”
Part 2: “A View To A Kill”, “Do You Believe In Shame?”, “Ordinary World”, “Sunrise”, ”The Valley”,
