This two part docuseries juxtaposes Simon’s process of making a new album during the COVID-19 pandemic against archival material tracing Simon’s career and creative journey, including revelatory, previously unseen footage from such historic moments as the recording of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and ‘Graceland,’ Simon & Garfunkel’s unforgettable reunion concert in Central Park, and, 10 years later, Simon’s solo concert there, where he performed before 750,000 people.”

Making appearances in the docuseries are “Saturday Night Live” creator and producer Lorne Michaels, Simon’s wife and singer Edie Brickell and composer Wynton Marsalis. Director Alex Gibney describes it as “a film that has been a labor of love of mine for three years.”  “It’s a stunning deep dive into Simon’s career and creative process”. “In Restless Dreams” captures Simon in both modes, for better more than for worse—a reverential doc about an iconic musician.

BONUS MATERIAL: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 03/14/24: Opening, teaser then an exclusive in-depth interview with Paul Simon as he discusses how he works musically and a discussion about the brand new documentary to be released later that week. Paul Simon sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Stephen, touching on other topics like his childhood love of rock and roll, his favorite (and least favorite) Paul Simon songs, his thought process while writing one of his favorite compositions, “Darling Lorraine,” and the dream that inspired his latest album, the subject of the documentary In Restless Dreams. Paul also discusses the precipitous hearing loss he’s suffered in his left ear, and medical research and advancements being made through the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss. After the interview, check out Paul’s stunning performance of “Your Forgiveness” from his new album, Seven Psalms.

Episode 1: “Verse One” Air Date 03/16/24: This episode chronicles Simon’s upbringing in Queens, N.Y., and the rise of folk duo Simon and Garfunkel with childhood friend Art Garfunkel. “Verse One” details Simon’s early collaborations with, then bitter feuds, with Garfunkel, a close childhood friend who becomes a bitter creative partner. Then, his solo career (and life) stumbles more than a few times, from his attempt to follow Garfunkel in front of the camera in the 1980 “One Trick Pony” to the accusations of “cultural slumming” he faced around his Grammy-winning world music tracks in “Graceland.” Also features features Simon working on his 20th and final album, “Seven Psalms,” dealing with the frustration of hearing loss and the toll exacted on his frail-sounding voice as he quietly lives in Texas with his wife, singer Edie Brickell.

DISC 1 Duration: 1 Hour 59 Minutes

Episode 2: “Verse Two” Air Date 03/23/24: Chronicling the aftermath of Simon and Garfunkel; Simon catapults into superstardom as a solo artist; showcasing an appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” a short-lived marriage to Carrie Fisher and Simon and Garfunkel’s reunion. This episodes also explores how Simon’s life smooths out a bit more and he’s just looking for the next thing to focus on. It ends at the Rhythm of the Saints portion of his career before zooming back to the present and Seven Psalms. But even so, Gibney knows the appeal of this man to his public is the music, first and foremost. He’s not about to sacrifice that for a more withering, clear-eyed expose on the musician.
