Description

Released originally on the long since discontinued and deleted formats of VHS (only in UK & Australia) and Japanese only LaserDisc exclusively. Also there was two Betamax releases of this rare concert also in UK & Australia.

This REMASTERED DVD is sourced and remastered directly from the original high quality Japan only imported LaserDisc to DVD! Quality is unmatched as it transferred from the long since deleted LaserDisc from OVER 40 years ago.

Background Information: In 2006 a music video collection was released on DVD in Europe and UK but not the US. The DVD included this classic concert as well (“Oil on Canvas”). The audio however while being converted to DVD was also compressed. Some audiophiles and sound purists argue that unless the remastering process includes completely “lossless” compression of audio that no matter how it may be converted/processed, it still is compressed audio thus producing some say a more audibly muddled sound. This is due to the lessening of the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest parts of the audio signal thus producing some distortion and a clipping audio effect. The DVD offered here is sourced and remastered from the original uncompressed 1982 Japanese only LaserDisc.

This LaserDisc contains a different track order to the album and an extra track as the intro, ‘Burning Bridges’. Different mixes of some songs appear.

Because of the large 12 inch size of the LaserDisc format it can easily support the amount of physical space required to successfully playback large uncompressed sound and in this case even digitally remastered in uncompressed form. This Remastered DVD features the original completely uncompressed digitally remastered audio recording allowing the original true recorded 1985 mix to come alive as it was originally intended to be heard in optimum sound quality. This original mix featured with completely uncompressed audio is exclusively preserved here and available in it’s original intended state of production for the very first time on DVD.

Description: This LaserDisc contains a different track order to the album and an extra track as the intro, ‘Burning Bridges’. In many ways, Oil On Canvas is something of an odd swansong for a band that were one of the most fascinating of the late-seventies and early-eighties “synth-pop” acts or New Romantics if you like, if Japan can even be described as such. By the time 1982 rolled towards its conclusion, the quartet’s long slog towards recognition and success -which had seen them bang heads against the wall since 1978’s ‘Adolescent Sex’- had been spectacularly rewarded with the surprise chart success of 1981’s Tin Drum and its slow-crawling single ‘Ghosts’, performed with icy detachment on Top Of The Pops in March of 1982 on its way to number five in the charts. Most bands would have received this belated adulation with relish and milked it for all it was worth, but for Japan it represented a final flourish, as Oil On Canvas was recorded live a month before they parted ways and released posthumously in June 1983.

Different mixes of some songs appear. Oil On Canvas is ultimately an oddity because it serves as both a great introduction to Japan, and as the final chapter in their existence (discounting Rain Tree Crow). As such, it has a strong emotional pull for the Japan fan, and offers a neat way in for the rest of the world.
