Description
Released exclusively on the long-discontinued VHS, Betamax, and LaserDisc formats on November 13, 1985, the following concert has NEVER been officially remastered and released on Blu-ray until NOW!
This 2026 REMASTERED Blu-ray has been sourced directly from the original high-quality LaserDisc master and mastered for Blu-ray for the very first time. Carefully transferred from the long-deleted LaserDisc release issued more than FORTY YEARS AGO, this presentation offers the finest quality currently available from the original source.
Background: This landmark concert was originally released on VHS in the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and South Korea. The LaserDisc edition, however, was issued only in Japan and the United States. The American LaserDisc release served as the source for this new remaster. Even today, original LaserDiscs remain highly collectible, often selling for $35 or more on the secondary market. Despite its historical significance, this classic Madonna concert has NEVER received an official Blu-ray release in any country. Now, for the first time ever, Madonna fans can finally experience this historic performance remastered from the original LaserDisc and presented on Blu-ray.
Description: Live – The Virgin Tour is Madonna’s first full-length concert film, documenting her breakthrough Virgin Tour at the height of her meteoric rise to international superstardom. Released on November 13, 1985, the video captures the excitement and energy of the tour filmed at Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan, on May 25, 1985.
Music video director Danny Kleinman, known for his work with Howard Jones, Simple Minds, Culture Club, and Adam Ant, directed the concert footage for Warner Bros. Records as a “video album.” At Madonna’s request, director James Foley filmed an exclusive opening sequence featuring her platinum blonde image and conservative wardrobe, accompanied by a narrated reflection on her journey from aspiring performer to international star.
“I went to New York. I had a dream. I wanted to be a big star, I didn’t know anybody, I wanted to dance, I wanted to sing, I wanted to do all those things, I wanted to make people happy, I wanted to be famous, I wanted everybody to love me. I wanted to be a star. I worked really hard, and my dream came true.”
The concert begins with “Dress You Up” and showcases Madonna at the very beginning of her legendary live career. Although performances of “Angel,” “Borderline,” and “Burning Up” were omitted from the original home video release, director Danny Kleinman chose to retain a memorable moment during “Like a Virgin” when an overzealous fan rushed the stage before being quickly removed by security—capturing the extraordinary level of excitement and fan devotion already surrounding Madonna in 1985.
Following its release, Live – The Virgin Tour became a major commercial success, topping Billboard’s Music Video Sales Chart and becoming the best-selling music video cassette of 1986. It was certified Double Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and received the Video Software Dealers Award for Most Popular Music Video. To promote the release, the live performances of “Dress You Up” and “Like a Virgin” were issued as official music videos on MTV, with both receiving nominations for Best Choreography at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.
