Background information: Originally LIVE in RIO was corded live in January 1985 and was released later that year in Japan and the UK. It received its eventual release in America on LaserDisc years later in 1991. Many years later in 1998 the LaserDisc was remastered and re-released as a reissue in exclusively in Japan, no other country. The remastering of this DVD is from that exact re-issued import version from Japan. The VHS formatted version of this release was throughout Europe and the UK in addition to Canada, Japan, Argentina Spain and Netherlands. The reissue of the VHS was release twice in the UK in 1997 and again in 1988.

Some audiophiles and sound purists argue that unless the remastering process includes completely “lossless” compression of audio that no matter how it may be converted/processed, it still is compressed audio thus producing some say a more audibly muddled sound. This is due to the lessening of the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest parts of the audio signal thus producing some distortion and a clipping audio effect. The DVD offered here is sourced from the LaserDisc that was re-issued with a digitally remastered soundtrack from back in 1985. Because of the large 12 inch size of the LaserDisc format it can easily support the amount of physical space required to successfully playback large uncompressed sound and in this case even digitally remastered in uncompressed form. This Remastered DVD  features the original completely uncompressed digitally remastered audio recording allowing the original true recorded mix to come alive as it was originally intended to be heard in optimum sound quality. This original mix featured with completely uncompressed audio is exclusively preserved here and available in it’s original intended state of production for the very first time on DVD.

Description:  At 2.00 a.m. on the 12th January, 1985, Queen stepped out on stage to make one of their most historic concert appearances to date.

Freddie, Roger, John and Brian faced a crowd of well over 250,000 people, the largest crowd ever assembled for a single concert. The occasion was the opening of the Rock In Rio Festival, an extraordinary ten-day event billed as ’90 hours of peace and music’ – a coming together of many of the world’s most important music artistes for what was intended to be the biggest rock celebration since Woodstock in 1969.

Having previously trail-blazed Latin America with their pioneering in 1981, it was only fitting that the opening ceremony should be staged by Queen, and their return to the country was without doubt the most eagerly anticipated moments in the festival.

It is a moment that has forever been captured in time…as an entry in history books as one of the biggest rock events of all time…as an unfailing memory in the minds of over 250,000 South Americans, and in the minds of Queen…and thankfully, for the rest of us in this unique video programme.
