Description
Released exclusively on the long since discontinued and deleted format of LaserDisc on the 10th of July 1991 in Japan and four days later on the same format in the USA. The following has NEVER been released on Blu-ray until NOW! This REMASTERED Blu-ray is sourced directly from the original high quality LaserDisc to Blu-ray for the first time ever! Quality is unmatched as it transferred from the long since deleted American LaserDisc from over THIRTY years ago.
Background: This performances and docustyle segments combined together was originally issued first on the VHS format in Europe, UK, Japan, USA. The only NTSC release on LaserDisc was from the USA. The American LaserDisc was sourced for this REMASTERED Blu-ray. Even now the LaserDisc of this release has been sold for over $70 in the USA as used. “play out” as a release to put it simply is extremely rare. Why? Because there are TWO versions of this existing artifact from the band: A) The original Japan and UK VHS versions are the only original editions of this release that contains the FULL 2 Hour and 4 Minute version and B) USA only LaserDisc is a short version of this release timing out at only 1 Hour and 36 Minutes long with about 28 minutes omitted from it’s original length that was only available on VHS.
This “DELUXE EDITION” is the combination of both the LaserDisc in it’s entirety and the missing segments that were released only on VHS are now combined together for the full length version in the BEST possible quality.
A majority of “play out” is sourced from the US only LaserDisc from which this REMASTERED Blu-ray comes from. Please note that while the US LaserDisc whilst rare is still NOT THE COMPLETE RELEASE of “play out” as mentioned above. The US only LaserDisc version is missing the following segments seen exclusively on the VHS versions from UK and Japan. They are:
1) DAY 3: Jonathan Ross Show: 23d of January 1991 (various clips of performances including
“Hello I Love You”, “Just Like Heaven”, “The Walk”, “Bland with an Edge”)
2) DAY 5: MTV “Unplugged” 24th of January 1991: A lengthy and interesting backstage segment for MTV. Footage includes the band applying make-up for the performances. Just Like Heaven and If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
The USA LaserDisc version: Does not include the two above mentioned segments and is only 1 Hour and 36 Minutes long. Please note that while the USA LaserDisc of “play out” whilst rare is still NOT THE COMPLETE version of this release missing the segments previously mentioned.
As with the Japan and UK VHS editions, the “DELUXE EDITION” restores 28 additional minutes, extending the runtime beyond two hours and adding performances of “Hello I Love You,” “Just Like Heaven,” and other tracks. It also features an expanded backstage segment centered on the MTV Unplugged performance, plus two complete bonus Unplugged songs: “Just Like Heaven” and “If Only Tonight We Could Sleep.” The UK PAL VHS—used as the source for these two sections—provided the highest-quality material for the Blu-ray remaster. Notably, this complete “Play Out” version was never released in its entirety on VHS or LaserDisc in the U.S., nor in any other format outside the UK and Japan.
MVR has assembled “Play Out” from the two highest-quality available sources, combining the 425-line resolution LaserDisc with the missing segments restored from the UK VHS master to create a unique The Cure collectible. This edition represents the most complete version of “Play Out” sourced from both the LaserDisc and the UK VHS master to deliver the highest quality presentation ever available worldwide—issued in its entirety on Blu-ray for the first time.
To this day, “Play Out”—in either its short or extended form—has never been officially released on Blu-ray until now. This marks the first complete Blu-ray edition, integrating the LaserDisc transfer with the additional UK VHS footage where required.
Another original release from your team at MVR.

This Deluxe DVD edition of The Cure’s Play Out is simply superb.
Blending live moments with recordings from concert halls and television studios,
it’s a real treat because it combines both versions of this release from different countries into one comprehensive release.
A real must-have for Cure collectors.
Thank you, MVR.
