Background Information: this concert shot at the peak of Tom Petty and the band’s career was released on VHS throughout Europe, Japan, the USA and Canada. The laser disk also released for the same countries. Since then this showcase performance from Tom Petty, the Heartbreakers has ever been released on DVD until now. Because of the large 12 inch size of the LaserDisc format it can easily support the amount of physical space required to successfully playback large uncompressed sound and in this case even digitally remastered in uncompressed form. This Remastered DVD features the original completely uncompressed digitally remastered audio recording allowing the original true recorded 1991 mix to come alive as it was originally intended to be heard in optimum sound quality. This original mix featured with completely uncompressed audio is exclusively preserved here and available in it’s original intended state of production for the very first time on DVD.

Description: Released in 1992 on VHS and LaserDisc, Take the Highway Live captures Tom Petty and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during the height of their early-1990s resurgence following the success of Into the Great Wide Open. Directed by Julien Temple, the concert film is widely praised by critics and longtime fans as one of the most authentic filmed documents of the band’s stage power. Rather than presenting a glossy MTV-style production, the film emphasizes the raw concert atmosphere—Petty’s relaxed but commanding stage presence, Mike Campbell’s biting guitar work, Benmont Tench’s organ flourishes, and the tight rhythm section that drove the Heartbreakers’ signature sound. The performance blends newer material from the early-90s era with beloved classics, creating a balanced portrait of a band that had already built a legendary catalog yet was still creatively vibrant.

Among fans and collectors, Take the Highway Live has earned a near-cult reputation because it was released primarily on VHS and LaserDisc and never issued on DVD. Enthusiasts often describe the program as one of the strongest pro-shot Petty concerts from the period, praising its seamless editing that combines footage from two performances into what appears to be a single continuous show. Many fans highlight the setlist as a defining snapshot of the Heartbreakers’ early-1990s touring lineup—mixing radio staples like “Free Fallin’,” “Refugee,” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” with deeper cuts and newer songs from the Into the Great Wide Open album. The result is a concert film that captures the band at a confident peak: road-tested, musically tight, and delivering a high-energy rock performance that still resonates strongly with collectors decades later and now available here for the very first time on DVD!
