Description
Lost 16mm reels documenting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1982-1983 ‘Long After Dark’ album cycle, including footage originally aired on MTV in 1983. In 2024, the long-thought lost 16mm reels of Tom Petty in Cameron Crowe’s first film, “Heartbreakers Beach Party”, were finally found. The classic ‘80s documentary captures Tom Petty and the band in 1982-1983 as they finish, promote, and tour around the “Long After Dark” album (their final with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine).
Crowe has learned how to seem like the band’s friend, which makes the film’s most honest and revealing moments possible. But there’s still enough fan in him for the film to ultimately feel like a celebration of their work.
After its initial airing on MTV in 1983, the film was deemed too experimental and abruptly pulled from the air. In more than 40 years since, it has become folklore to fans, musicians and within the entertainment industry – even credited with inspiring scenes in Spinal Tap. The highly anticipated & fully remastered “Heartbreakers Beach Party” is a fun, candid, fast paced, & musically rich ride with America’s greatest rock & roll band, a time capsule of the dawn of the MTV era, and a rare & shining glimpse into Tom Petty’s lasting creative genius.
This is a candid glimpse at the Tom Petty’s Long After Dark tour in the ‘80s, Heartbreakers Beach Party is a time-traveling experience and a proper tribute to the rock-defying legend.

Glad you did such a clear, great sounding bit of Tom’s life on the road singing the rare “I’m Stupid” alone smirking to the camera. Cam Crow looked like a big headed star struck Teen rappin with Tom alone. Even the Losers explained, Change of Heart, $8.98 LP name to Piss off Record Moguls, Tom is a tough funny talented guy. I watched it twice in a row, so well done.

Absolutely amazing! I was able to see this documentary when it was released in the theater and I was so disappointed that it was only available to stream afterwards. Imagine my excitement to find a resource, the Music Video Resource that would allow me to have a hard copy on DVD to watch forever. Physical media rules! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
