1. Whitney: Can I Be Me 08/18/17: By the time Whitney Elizabeth Houston was 15, she was singing background vocals for Chaka Khan, Lou Rawls, and Jermaine Jackson. In 1983 Whitney signed a worldwide recording contract with Clive Davis’s Arista Records. However her success came with its fair share of drug use, love affairs, and scandals. Directors Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal weave never before seen video, candid interviews and behind the scenes performance footage into a raw and uncensored portrait of Whitney Houston, who died suddenly at age 48 after years of struggling with addiction. Exploring her far-reaching impact, the directors focus on Houston’s central dilemma: even though she had made millions of dollars and was recognized as having one of the greatest voices of all time, she still couldn’t do what she wanted, either professionally or in her personal life.
2. The 2017 American Music Awards 11/19/17: The most anticipated highlight of Sunday night’s American Music Awards was actually a blast from the past: Christina Aguilera’s Whitney Houston tribute. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the debut of Houston’s film The Bodyguard, and even now, five years after the singer’s death, her absence still looms large. The late diva was a singular talent—and as fans have come to expect from Aguilera, the 90s pop idol belted her own way through the greatest-hits medley with gusto. Aguilera’s medley was ambitious from the start, kicking off with “I Will Always Love You” before moving on to hits including “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You” while images from The Bodyguard played in the background. As typically happens with tribute jams, not everyone liked Aguilera’s occasionally pitchy performance—and those who were less than impressed found an avatar in Pink, who seemed to be caught grimacing in the audience. (Pink had nothing but nice things to say about Aguilera’s performance on Twitter, though, and could be seen cheering during the broadcast.) After her performance, Aguilera thanked both the A.M.A.s and Houston’s family on social media “for making a little girl’s dream come true.”
