Interweaving archival footage with candid interviews, the documentary presents Chase in his own words—unfiltered, often combative, and self-aware about his reputation for being difficult—while also delving into his personal life, including his family’s reflections on a turbulent childhood, a significant health scare, and the complex dynamics of fame and fallout. Critics have generally recognized the film’s effort to balance Chase’s undeniable comedic talent with the more challenging aspects of his persona, noting that the documentary neither sanitizes nor sensationalizes his story but instead creates a layered portrayal that is as revealing as it is provocative.
Critical response has been mixed but substantial, with reviewers highlighting the film’s raw honesty and Zenovich’s skillful curation of material that captures both Chase’s comedic genius and his flaws. Some reviewers described it as a fascinating, if sometimes difficult, examination of a performer who helped shape American comedy yet remains a deeply polarizing figure, prompting discussions about legacy, accountability, and the price of brilliance. While some audiences have praised the documentary’s depth and the way it contextualizes decades of headlines and myths, others have been struck by its unflinching moments that underscore Chase’s pricklier traits. The contrasting reactions from critics and viewers alike reflect the documentary’s success in provoking thoughtful conversation about a legendary but contentious entertainer.
